This is my unit lesson for my final project. I created a video cast that introduce vocabulary related to the leisure time. I also developed a classroom activities.

Evernote is an excellent resource for students and teachers to organize their documents. It has a free version. An for someone that is doing research is excellent to use it as a book mark. Specially you can just high light what is the part of the article that you are interested. It is very easy to use and you can reach your documents anywhere.

Blogs for Computer-Mediated Language Learning / Spanish Bloggsphere
« on: March 02, 2010, 08:28:53 AM » This article has a list of different Spanish blogs. It also describe how the Spanish blogs is being changing. The authors said that one of the area that you can see change are in the topics. Some of the popular topics are: blogs, politics and science.  I think that we have to consider this when we are going to include blogs in our classroom. We need to know the level of our students and what kind of blog is appropriate for them.

Can Podcast Replace Professors? ???In this article Mckinney and colleagues investigate the impact of mobile learning in the classroom performance. In their research they had two groups:
a) students that have to go to the lecture w/ power point and they have to take notes
b)students that do not have to go to the lecture, they just have to listen a podcast with the power point hand outs and take notes. The researches found that the students that took the class through the podcast performed better than the students in the lecture.
This article remind me when I interviewed Professor Kelm. I asked him why he teach in the classroom if he has all his material on-line. And he changed my question. The question is how you can use the classroom time to do other activities? So, I think that podcast is a good resource as a supplemental material but it not substitute the professor. They are helpful to review your notes or for learners that are better listening stuff that just going over their notes.


Here is an article about the role of virtual worlds in the classroom by Strogova. It talks about the challenges that the instructors and students have to face. It also give a general introduction about the virtual world. Then explain how it help to an active learning and give us some teaching techniques.

Videos are excellent to bring real example of the target language. You can do different activities inside or outside the classroom to teach language and culture through videos. In the attachment is an example of a lesson plan that include a video activity.

In this article Hoffman explains how the use of computer are expanding the learning of medical students. I enjoyed this article because we can use some of the activities to teach Spanish or any other language. The simulations activities are great to learn vocabulary.

Brave New (Virtual) World: Transforming Language Learning into Cultural Studies through Online Learning Environments (MOOs) by JEFFREY SCHNEIDER and SILKE VON DER EMDE

In this article the authors explain how they use Moos to teach language and culture. They explain how they use Moos as a virtual world to teach German language and culture.

This is the web page of Professor Kelm: He uses different kinds of technology to teach Portuguese and Spanish. I had the opportunity to interview him last semester and he has plenty of ideas of how use technology in a meaningful way. He uses blogs, tweeter, videos, ever notes, face book, etc. I hope that you enjoy his page.


I like the idea of use message boards to teach language. I think that if we  want that our students have a good experience using message board, we should guide them. I think that before send the students write in a public forum, we should prepare pre-activities that help them be familiar with the language and a style that people use in different message boards. Also, if the teacher want that her/his students participate an specific forum, it is a good idea to analyze in classroom who are the people that participate in that forum or how is the subculture of that forum. And explain the students the culture and the different subculture that they can find. This may help them to know how to initiate a communication in the target language and not be afraid of participate in the forum.

I also think that is a good idea to have an after activity. This activity will help the teacher see what are the struggle that the students are having with the message board activity.


E-mail is one of the simple ways to teach language beyond the classroom. As a TA of Spanish grammar I used it a lot. I send to my students more examples about the topic that we discussed in class. I give them support in their online homework s when they do not understand or are having trouble. Through their messages I can see their needs and send an e-mail to the whole class clarifying questions about grammar concepts or bring new examples to the classroom.
Another way to use the e-mail is to post a topic to make a story and then each student has to add a sentence to the story. After every body add their sentence you can discussed some of the grammar concepts in the classroom. And finally you can use it as a pen pal activity. They can write each other or with native speakers from other university.
