While reading, there can be periodical comprehension checks after a certain number of paragraphs/sections.
The teacher can have students take turns reading a certain number of sections/paragraphs aloud and then as a class, discuss what was just read. Again as a class, there can be discussion on what the main idea of the sections/paragraphs was.
Individually, students can write one sentence paraphrasing the main idea, or as a class, there can be a decision made on what one sentence paraphrasing the main idea is.

This activity assumes that students will read the article with a partner.


In the pre-reading activity, students began a KWL activity by looking at the title only and discussing what they KNOW about the topic. They then make a list of questions that they WANT to know from reading.


Based on the above, do the following DURING Reading:
ADDITIONAL OPTION:  Create a special VOCABULARY section in the WANT TO KNOW section of the KWL chart.  While reading, have students list words that are unfamiliar or that they want to learn more about.

Divide the text into sections according to supporting ideas and ask the students to come up with the main idea for each section (No more than 5-6 words).

This activity showcases analyzing the parts of a text to differentiate information.

During-Reading


As a during-reading activity, a worksheet could be created. With this worksheet the students will be required to work in groups of three to four people to identify main points of the article, methods of discovery, and the researchers or tools involved for each point.

While reading this article first skim through looking for keywords. Then go back and reread scanning for the words from the pre-listening discussion.

Strategy: Monitoring Vocabulary Knowledge
Activity: As you read, underline the words that you donít understand. After you underline, decide if not knowing that word keeps you from understanding the entire sentence. If not knowing the word keeps you from understanding the sentence, circle the word and look up the definition. If you can understand the sentence without knowing the meaning of the word you underlined, move onto the next sentence.
