Paraphrase Warm-Up

This activity can be used as an introduction to paraphrase or at a second/third lesson after paraphrasing techniques were initially introduced.

Create pairs of cards, each with one sentence on it. The first sentence should be a paraphrase of the other, for instance:

He was saddened by the news.

The news upset him.


Give one card to each student in your class; then ask your students to find a person in class who has the paraphrased version of their sentence. Once students get in pairs, you can ask them to evaluate the quality of paraphrase and/or create another paraphrased sentence.
