Paraphrase Telephone
« on: March 27, 2015, 04:08:44 PM »
I think that  "paraphrase telephone" could be a fun activity to help teach the important of paraphrasing, both in terms of the students' using their own words and maintaining accuracy. Similar to the spoken version of the game, the instructor would write down two or three sentences on a paper and then give it to a student. This student would have to paraphrase what the instructor wrote and then pass the paper to the next student. This would continue until all students have had a chance to paraphrase. The instructor could compare and contrast the original with the final product. As in the spoken version of the game, deviations from the original meaning are often humorous and interesting. If time permits, this could be done a second time with added emphasis on accuracy.

This sounds like a really fun and effective way to help students with paraphrasing!  I think that this could be done as a spoken version, if you're just introducing paraphrasing in the class. Doing it orally could help students with their fluency as well.  After you've covered paraphrasing and students have done practice, you could do this activity again in a written form.  You could even do it later in the course as a review of paraphrasing, if needed.
