After finding out what students already know/activating schemata, you could create sentences that define key vocabulary and have students match the vocabulary words to the descriptions/definitions.
  • For example, "A _________ is a tool that is used to view far-away objects in outer space as if they were up close" and students would select "telescope".
We think that this activity uses different levels of Bloom's Taxonomy depending on students' prior background knowledge.
  • For students who are very familiar with outer space, this activity will be more like understanding/remembering.
  • For students who are not familiar with the vocabulary at all, this activity might be a combination of understanding and analyzing since Ss will need to (1) look up the words in the dictionary and understand the dictionary definition, (2) understand the definition given by the teacher, and (3) compare and contrast the 2 definitions to find the best match between the dictionary definition and the teacher's definition.

Video + Worksheet
-Find a YouTube video or take the video linked within the article (Ask a Spaceman) to give engaging and visual context for the concepts introduced in the article.
-Create a worksheet with a list of some important vocabulary words, particularly the specialized terminology involved, such as: grappling, Big Bang, Nobel laureate, Cepheid, light-years, observatory, etc.
-With the worksheet, they can take initiative and find (online or by asking others) not just the definitions but also the real life contexts of these words.

 :) Pre-reading activity: Share what you know about the topic and predict what might be read.


 :book Warm-up discussion:
1. Whole class: Show the picture in the article to students. Ask the student what it is. Expected answer: galaxy or space.
2. Small group: After they give the answer, ask them to discuss in groups: How much do you know about space? Share with your group members first. They can search online to see how to say certain words.
3. Whole class: Share what they talked about in groups with the whole class. Write down some key vocabulary they mention on the board.
4. Small group: After sharing what they know about space and galaxy, reveal the title of the article to students, and tell students this is the article they will read in class. Ask them to predict: What will be talked about in the article? What aspects of this topic will be talked about? (The finding, the evidence, the explanation of the finding, and the impact of the finding, ect.)

GROUP DISCUSSION (schema activation)
- What do you know about the Hubble Space Telescope?
- What questions do you have about the Hubble Space Telescope?
- Are you interested in astronomy? Do you enjoy learning about the universe?
- Based on the article title, what do you think this article is about?


READING VOCABULARY: give the following definitions. Can give it as a list or have students do it as a matching activity (e.g. terms in one column, definitions in another column, students have to match them).
- Telescope: a tool for seeing things that are far away. It makes things appear nearer
- Universe: space and everything in it
- Expansion rate: the speed at which something grows bigger
- Acceleration: the change in speed
- Galaxies: a group of many stars

Galaxy -- millions of stars with dust and gravity
Accelerating -- getting faster and faster
Expansion -- getting bigger and bigger
Gravitational lenses -- a technique used to measure the distances light traveled from a bright, active galaxy to the Earth
Astrophysicists -- an expert in stars

Activity: Students will work in groups and come up with 2-3 questions about the article from the information provided in its title. Some example questions are: What are galactic lenses? Which universe is being discussed in the article? How do galactic lenses confirm that universe’s age? How do galactic lenses confirm that universe’s size?
