While reading, there can be periodical comprehension checks after a certain number of paragraphs/sections.
The teacher can have students take turns reading a certain number of sections/paragraphs aloud and then as a class, discuss what was just read. Again as a class, there can be discussion on what the main idea of the sections/paragraphs was.
Individually, students can write one sentence paraphrasing the main idea, or as a class, there can be a decision made on what one sentence paraphrasing the main idea is.

This activity assumes that students will read the article with a partner.


In the pre-reading activity, students began a KWL activity by looking at the title only and discussing what they KNOW about the topic. They then make a list of questions that they WANT to know from reading.


Based on the above, do the following DURING Reading:
  • With a partner, students read the first paragraph of the article at least twice. STOP reading the article at that point, and take a few minutes to add more questions to the "WHAT YOU WANT TO KNOW" list created during the Pre-Reading Activity. If applicable, revise (or perhaps answer!) any existing questions.
  • Take turns reading aloud (alternating paragraphs or sections). The NON-reader should monitor the questions that they developed during the Pre-Reading activity, calling attention to when a question is answered (or partially answered) by what was read.
  • As reading progresses, continue to add more questions to the "WANT TO KNOW" column if they arise.
ADDITIONAL OPTION:  Create a special VOCABULARY section in the WANT TO KNOW section of the KWL chart.  While reading, have students list words that are unfamiliar or that they want to learn more about.

Divide the text into sections according to supporting ideas and ask the students to come up with the main idea for each section (No more than 5-6 words).

  • Main idea for paragraphs 1-3 can be "Surprising Findings"
  • Main idea for paragraphs 4-6 can be "Comparison of New and Old Findings"
  • Main idea for the last 5 paragraphs can be "Possible Explanations"
This activity showcases analyzing the parts of a text to differentiate information.

During-Reading


As a during-reading activity, a worksheet could be created. With this worksheet the students will be required to work in groups of three to four people to identify main points of the article, methods of discovery, and the researchers or tools involved for each point.

Columns in the Chart: Facts, Method, Researchers or Tools
