White Smoke, Not free but maybe exellent

I know that this forum favors the free, but sometimes for the good software you gotta pony up some cash.

This product, WhiteSmoke, might be worth a try.  It also comes with a free dictionary and online tutorial.  It reminds me little of the Rosetta Stone language learning system.

The site is here at http://www.whitesmoke.com/

It's available in different languages.  If you had a classroom with a computer, it might be nice to let the students share, put their essay into it, and learn from it for 20 minutes before passing it on.

I'm not sure how it compares with standard MS Word type grammar checkers, but it looks like it goes more in depth.

If you've tried it, let me know!
