Pre-reading Activities for an article about Galaxies
« on: October 07, 2008, 09:17:05 AM »
These pre-reading activities are for an article titled:  Galaxy ramming through space creates fireballs, which may be found via Astronomy.com (article also attached, but follow the link if possible since it has added interactive features):

Idea 1: Prediction
Based on the appearance of website and the advertisements and length of the text, predict the difficulty level of the reading.

Then read the title & look at at the picture, and predict the content of the article.  This activity can be scaffolded.  1) elicit a few key words, put them on the whiteboard, blackboard, OHP, etc., and then draw a circle around each word  2) create a mindmap (If you have a clear idea of what the during reading activity is, you can guide the mindmap accordingly)

Idea 2: Pre-teach vocabulary
Project some graphics of keywords for this article onto a screen, and ask questions like, "Where is the galaxy?"  Alternatively, you could have a matching activity, where students match vocab words with pictures/definitions.

In regards to this article, "Galaxy ramming through space creates fireballs" I would do the following as "pre-reading" activities for this reading:

1) Have the students discuss in groups about their personal experiences related to Astronomy, the galaxy, space and starts.  Perhaps some of them studied astronomy in college or has interests in this area due to childhood dreams of becoming an astronaut.  In this way I would build a schema for the reading.

2) I would have the students read the first sentence of each paragraph in order to understand the main idea of each paragraph and understand the importance of paragraphs.  In this way they can work on the strategy of "skimming" and work on their ability to "understand the main idea."

3) Lastly, I would have the students "scan" the reading for words they don't already know and circle/highlight these words (the pre-reading activity).  Then, I would have them work in groups to try and "guess the meaning" of these words based on context (a during reading activity that I will discuss in my next post).

Then, I would go into the "during reading activity" (Please see my next post for these ideas).

I hope this helps.  :?don'tknow

As a pre-reading activity, I would read the title, look at picture and caption, skim article to see that it includes lots of scientific, technical terms with that I would be pretty comfortable with the genre of this text and would be better able to approach it.

As a pre-reading activity for this class, show students this clip :Contact Opening Scene

And before they watch it, I'll ask them to write a list of words they see in the clip. They should be able to write words like earth, mars, galaxy, outer space etc just as Accessing Prior Knowledge strategy after they've watched this clip and connect the list of vocab with what they are going to watch and also read in the article.

If you are teaching in a city with a Planetarium it would be great to organize a field trip there to let students get familiar with the specific vocabulary and the topic in general. Students will feel motivated about the topic and will be easier for them to conect the reading with their Planetarium experience.

:redstar Building up the backgroud knowledge before reading. :redstar

[Group work]

1] Before read the article, a teacher show students 'the title of the article' and 'a galaxy picture' from the website.
(However, the teacher should not allow the students to access to the website.)

2] The teacher have studetns to search for related information on the Internet.

-Students can search for any information such as video clips, movies, articles, stories on Google, Wikipedia, related websites, etc.

-Teachers can give students specific categories which the students should search for.
e.g.) visual info., articles, stories, vocabulary, etc.

3] After searching for the information, all members in each group share what they have found and what are the relations between the collected information and the title of the article.

In this process, they can predict the article and defend their opinions and information.

These are pre-reading acitivtiy related to the topic, ' Galaxy ramming through space creates fireballs'

This activity is appropriate for middle and high school students in order to make them be familiar with the finding information using library. (Using media and internet are mentioned by Hyejin. If you are interested in how to use internet sources, you can refer to her posting.)

<Finding words related to the topic>

1.Teacher let students know about the topic of the next class.

2.Teacher allows students to visit library and refer to science
magazines, newspaper and books regarding to 'galaxy'.

3.Stdents should make a copy articles, reports as well as pictures
focusing on what phenomena happened in galaxy untill now.

4.Students should classify sources that they scrapped according
to the time order with making a picture books of their own.

5.Students should find words regarding 'galaxy' from their picture books in order to share the words what they found by themselves with classmates in classroom.

6.Finally, in class, after skimming through the news, 'Galaxy ramming through space creates fireballs', they can know how many words related with the topic they found.

I think the teacher can also show the students the photo of the fireballs as a pre-reading activity.

The teacher can either ask the students to form a group and discuss what might happen, and then share their ideas with the class to see whether their prediction is the same with what actually happened in the article.
Or, based on this photo, the teacher can have the students use their background knowledge and imagination to write down a story and share with the class.  Also, to list a bunch of vocabulary would work as well.

Dear Forum :o

A pre-reading activitie for this article: Begin by getting your students to think about the idea of evolution and how things change.  Then show them several pictures of something changing over time

ex: a flower, a tree, a person aging.....

Then show students flip-books. Begin by showing it to them slowly and then show it to them quickly.

Ask them to think about what types of things evolve.
Do galaxies evolve?

--> Have students read the article.

After they have read the article they can create their own flip-books about how galaxies evolve. The difficulty level can be adjusted depending on the class.

Good luck! :bluestar

Astronomy: Galaxy ramming through space creates fireballs

1. Find and show a video of the galaxy and its stars (there are several youtube videos under "galaxy clusters")
2. Ask students to highlight all vocabulary words that they don't know.  (Don't read yet but skim)
3. Ask them to categorize "scientific" words (verbs & nouns) and decide how important it is to know the meaning of these terms.
4. Ask them to choose a maximum of 15 words that they think they need to know in order to understand the main points of the article--ask them to guess (group work)
5. Prepare and show a list of vocabulary that is important in comprehension of article (e.g., ramming, phenomenon, clusters, collide etc.) Show the students the list and discuss meanings
(Suggestion: Use a visual dictionary http://www.visuwords.com)
6. Talk about the text-structure of the article (formal schemata)

Here are a few ideas for pre-reading activities:

   1.  Short class discussion about students' previous knowledge of astronomy
What do you remember from science class?
What do you know about the solar system?

   2. Prediction - ask the students:
What do you think the article will be about after reading only the title and subtitle?

   3. Watch a YouTube video about galaxies

Planet Earth Solar System - Milky Way Galaxy Orion Nebula...

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DD3Nxu-RbvM

   4. Vocabulary ? have students look up words that they may not know
There are two ways that you could do this - either give the students a list of words to look up prior to reading, or have them skim the article for unfamiliar words themselves. If you choose to give them a list, here are some good words to include:
to evolve

      evolution
      galaxy
      universe
      phenomenon
      filament
      cluster
      elliptical
      gravity
      gravitational
