Pre-Reading Activity for Article about Food

Pre-Reading Activity

Teacher?s Instructions:  Gather between 6 ? 12 pictures of various food items from a local grocery store sales add.  Cut the pictures so that the prices are not attached.  Have the students work in groups to try to match the correct picture with the price.  Following the group work, ask the students to explain which pictures they associated with which item and have them talk about why.

Student?s Instructions:  Work with your partner.  Match the pictures I gave you with the price that you think is correct.  Be ready to share your choices and your reason why.
I am also including some sample adds that could be cut up and used as pictures for this lesson.

The article that could be used with this is included also.

Another Pre-reading Activity for the same article.

Students will discuss the following questions in small groups:

    * What kind of foods did you eat in your home country? Describe them.
    * What kind of foods do you eat here? Do they taste or look different from what you had back home?
    * Do you usually buy or cook your own meals? Which is better for you and why?
    * Is it usually cheaper to buy or cook your own meals? Explain your answer.
    * Share a recipe with your group members that you enjoy making.

Extension: As a class or in groups, students will create a shopping list or have one provided by the teacher. Using local grocery store salespapers, students will figure out the price of each item on the shopping list and its total price. Students will then use their intuition to remember prices from their home country and compare them to the prices here in Champaign (USA). This activity could also be used with Jim?s pre-reading activity.
