Translation as a prereading activity!
« on: May 08, 2009, 09:31:19 PM »
One way to use students mother tongue in an influential and directed way is translation.  8)

Translation could be used as a prereading activity. Students could be asked to translate a specific text from their mother tongue to the target language. This will help to familiarize students with the vocabulary for a certain topic and/or category of literature. Students can then move on to the text in the target language.
A translation exercise as a prereading will help them to launch off to the reading that is required from the class through relying on their mother tongue ( but not too much  ;)!! for they will be already moving away from their mother tongue through translating it into the target language).
