Strategic Reading

Found this interesting article about potential issues in English L2 reading and the use of "strategic reading" practices that help learners contextualize and understand information that may normally be above their proficiency level. The idea behind "strategic processing" is that there is some level of awareness on behalf of the learner, who may be using textual enhancement such as highlighting, underlining, and/or summarizing; in some cases the learners may be aware of this very consciously, and in other cases they may only notice they are doing these things peripherally (p. 23). It also provides some good information about how input/output affect language processing as well as how information is stored in both working memory (WM) and long-term memory (LTM) (p. 29).

Overall the article concludes that there is a need for more development of strategic reading skills in the L2 classroom, especially for those students who have lower proficiencies/reading skills. However in doing so, we (as ESL/EFL educators) have to be careful to ensure that we account for the unique needs of the classroom/students within the classroom, since not this is not universally applicable to every English L2 learner. :)
