This activity would be better for younger learners, but you could still use it for older learners, too. After reading a short story, hand out pictures to students. Depending on learning level, give each each student more or less pictures, with more advanced having more pictures, and less advanced having less pictures. The pictures will be of things that happen in the plot.


Draw a timeline on the board and ask students "What happened first?" and when they answer, ask "Who has a picture of this happening? Come bring it up to the board!" Show students that the far left side is the beginning, and the far right side is the ending.


Once all the pictures are up, go over the timeline of the story once more as a class. Make sure to use transition words, like first, second, next, then, finally, etc.


This is a good way to monitor overall class comprehension.
