L2 Writing Assessment

Here is a powerpoint presentation of L2 writing assessment. The purpose of my presentation is to argue for the preference of multiple-trait rating scales over holistic rating scales in pedagogical contexts (large-scale assessment is beyond the scope of discussion here). In holistic rating, raters assign a single score to a written text based on an a priori scale whereas in multiple-trait rating, raters assign a separate score to each component of writing. This preference was supported both by reflections from the audience after rating sample paragraphs, and a small-scale statistical analysis of Pearson correlation showing a higher interrater reliability with the multiple-trait rating scale.
