Reading Activites (during reading) / The Tell-Tale Heart

For this excellent short story, I designed several activities that can be used in-class. Students will be reading the story in-class together, and then doing the activities to make sure that they understand the content and will be able to have a further discussion. Doing the reading in class makes students to follow up the story and then share their ideas with classmates immediately. It's a rather efficient way for the students who are not likely to be self motivated in reading.

I love it! The worksheets give the students good examples of using a proper language giving feedback to other students. Sometimes, the students don't really mean to use harsh words--they just don't know how to express it appropriately (maybe it has to do with the cultural differences). The samples can help the students to give kind and helpful feedback, and lessen the possibility of hurting someone's feeling.

It's a cool game! I was also thinking about that maybe the teacher can do some expansions in this game, for example, making adverb cards, preposition cards.....etc, so that the students can create longer sentences, and maybe they can make stories based on these cards!

I just found a really interesting app, which might be really helpful for learning vocabularies by drawing, and it's a fun game!

If you have iphone, ipod...etc, you can download it and also suggest your students download it, too (I think it's also available for android system users). The vocabularies showed up in the game mostly are popular and common used vocabularies, some of them are more like slang or popular acronym. I think it's very useful both from the perspective of linguistic competence and socilcultural competence to ESL learners.
(But be careful, you might be addicted to it easily!)

I think the website is really helpful for learners to acquiring new vocabularies! There are many interesting pictures to help students to memorize the new vocabularies, and are all categorized clearly. I believe that using visual images is always a good way for learning vocabularies either to beginner or intermediate, or even higher levels. but not only images do help students, for high level learners, learning about the word structures would be also very helpful, such as the prefix, suffix...etc. That's exactly what I did for GRE test, since I have to memorize so many new and hard vocabularies which are even seldom used by native speakers. The best way for me to memorize those words is by using the strategy of deconstructing the words.

After introducing the creative games website , which  has a really useful word generator (and interesting games!), I had been thinking about how to fix the problem if the teacher wants to choose specific word class to match students' level. Fortunately I found this cool website:

You can choose the word length, the number of syllables, forms, or even the initial sound of the word, and then create your own word list for your students! For Example, if your students are at the beginning level, you might choose the words with shorter length or less syllables. You can also choose how many commonly used words you want to include into your list by selecting Dolch words or Fry words. Anyways, there are many things that you can use in this website, I hope you enjoy creating your own word list!

In order to raise students' interest, using images or videos as pre-reading activities can help students to understand the material more, especially for the students who are not really interested in the topic, or when the topic is to hard to understand. In this case, I found a intro video about "pulsar," and it can give students a general idea about what they are going to read. (The video is kinda dramatic)

The flashback activity can help students to come up with interesting ideas, especially for the paper focusing on literature. By finding out the back story of the reading materials, the students can approach to the materials in different ways. There's a great "back story" being published based on Jane Eyre : Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. This book used a different perspective of the same character in Jane Eyre. So of you are interested in the production of the flashback, please take a look to these two books :)

Teaching with visual aids can actually make the class more interesting, especially to children. Children are easy to be attracted by what comes to their eyes (especially vivid images or cartoons). This is really interesting, and it does work for higher level learners who can be self motivated! I think after the discussion, learners can integrate the thoughts and then write a short response based on what they discuss in groups!

I also noticed that there are a lot of descriptive words in Harry Potter! I think it is a good material for students to focus on the how the language is being used--they can do brainstorming in groups and then draw a picture of the story. By using the image (which is drawn by themselves), students can memorize descriptive words easier than just read without any visual aids, they can also pay attention on how the sentences are being formed (either in order to be more easier to read or to be more beautiful). This can also help students with their writing skill!

Harry Potter Lessons! / Harry Potter-Draw with Words

Group Exercise:
Make students to be a group of three or four, and each group will get a paragraph from Harry Potter randomly. According to the depiction from the paragraph, students have to draw a picture of their assigned paragraph. Once every group gets done with their pictures, ask the students to describe their pictures and then try to put the pieces of stories together. In this exercise, students have to focus on the narrative and depictive representation. In addition, they have to pay more attention on how the words are being used, and how the sentences are being structured, which they might skip a lot while they are reading.
