Language Issues / Using a Thesaurus
« on: March 02, 2008, 09:42:18 PM »
This is an introductory activity I do when we talk about
summarizing.
To warn the students of wrong thesaurus use, we watch a short
clip from "Friends" where Joey uses the thesaurus
on every single word to make his letter sound "grown-up"
We had a lot of fun with this clip.
It was Season 10, Episode 5: The One Where Rachael?s Sister Babysits

I'll upload the script of the clip.

Have fun!

I used a similar activity before and it works very nicely.
It's fun to read all the funny and witty responses students
come up with!

Thesis Statements / Activity on Thesis Statements
« on: January 29, 2008, 03:17:20 AM »
This is a beginning activity I used with my ESL 501 class.

I took two sample diagnostics from the previous semester.

One was a rough draft that was poorly organized. The other

had a better organization and a clear thesis.

After reading the two different essays, I asked students

to talk about some questions on the handout that helped students

brainstorm some characteristics of a good thesis statement.
