Retelling a Story From Different Perspectives

 Level: High intermediate

 Aim: Practice descriptive writing and telling a story
 Resources: short newspaper accounts of the interesting events
  • Hand out a copy of a suitable newspaper story to each student. As them to read it silently. When appropriate, given students the relevant background to the incident and explain vocabulary as necessary.
  • Explain the task to the students: They have to writ an account of the story from the perspective of one of the persons involved. Different students in the class will choose different perspectives. Ask students to suggest who might be the writers of the different versions of the story. Put their suggestions on the board. Ask students to select one of the roles and begin to think of their own version of the story.
  • Brainstorm with the class on what the reactions might be of each of the people involved in the incident. Elicit as many ideas and suggestions as possible.
  • Now ask students to start writing about the event from the point of view of the role they have chosen and to make rough notes on the type of information they will include in the story. Move around the class and give suggestions as needed.
  • Ask students to write the first draft of the story. Arrange them into different groups according to the role they play. For example, all the drivers will form one group, all police officers will form another group, and so on. Within each group, have students exchange and compare the drafts in terms of the information included and the clarity of the event.
  • have students individually revise their drafts. Give feedback when needed.
  • (optional) Invite some of the students to read their stories aloud.
  • Have students exchange papers with another group and read a story written by someone from a different perspective (e.g., a student taking the role of the driver in a traffic accident will read the story written by another student taking the role of the police officer).
  • Ask students to compare the different stories written by a single group: How are they similar and different? What information is included in one but not the other? Does this make the story more effective? Pay special attention to the use of tense and connectives.
This task gives students the opportunity to practice creative writing, mainly by helping them to realize the importance of perspective when writing a story. It gives them the opportunity to notice the different perspectives from which a story can be told and how details and description might vary based on who is telling the story. This creative task is presented in an interactive way. It gives emphasis on group discussion, and it gives students some opportunity to interact, share their ideas, and negotiate for meaning. It also values the importance of peer review. Students are asked to comment on their peers' writing and to provide suggestions to improve their stories. In addition, it emphasizes the importance of a process writing in which students are given the opportunity to brainstorm ideas, write their first draft, and discuss and give feedback to each other before they write their final drafts. I like the brainstorming and elicitation part in which students are asked to brainstorm the reactions of different people about a particular incident as it would help them understand and get some information about the role they are going to focus on in their stories and would help them see how people's reactions to the same incident are different. Finally, I would suggest adding a reading task before this task. The purpose of this reading task is to allow students analyze some stories with respect to the perspectives from which they are written and to predict the different details that might see in another version of the same story written from a different perspective.
