Understand motivation in langauge learning
« on: April 25, 2021, 11:44:29 AM »
As language learners and teachers, we sometimes wonder to exactly what extent motivation affects one's language learning. There have been lots of research done on this subject which resulted in remarkable discussions. In this post, I am sharing a few great resources regarding motivation to help us understand the role it plays in language acquisition.

In order to become great language teachers, we must first understand what incentivizes our students and how to help them maximize their motivations. This article https://www.thelingoworld.com/general/motivation-in-second-language-learning approached the topic by first explaining what motivation is and different types of motivation, then it proceeded to talk about how motivation can influence second language learning and therefore what teachers should do to truly inspire students.

Another excellent online article: https://www.fluentu.com/blog/motivation-to-learn-a-language/  about mindset change also provided some great insights for ESL teachers to understand their students' performance change. It mentioned a few motivation killer mindsets such as "I no longer have to do this", "I realized I am bad at languages" and how to switch them into something that can serve language learning in a positive way.

Finally, I would like to share this video: https://youtu.be/xQll7zTEe6A about motivation. It was made by this extremely talented Chinese boy called Bruce, who grew up in China but can speak perfect English with a southern accent. He presented lots of wonderful points with regard to second language learning in such a poetic way.
