Modified texts: Acceptance letter
« on: September 01, 2009, 09:45:58 AM »
We, the ESL teachers always worry whether the text we are using is authentic
and relevant to learners. Once I used UIUC grad school acceptance letter to
organize an activity about style and formality of professional writing.
I have used the original letter I got, instead I modified it to sound "informal"
and "unprofessional". For example, I used contractions (e.g. We're), did not use
capital letters for proper nouns (e.g. matesl) and used colloquial words (e.g. stuff).
I first let students to discuss and correct it.
It was an interactive modifying exercise.

What a great idea! They could then compare their versions with each other and come up with the best one and then compare it to the original.
